As I came floating down impassive Rivers,
I no longer felt myself guided by the haulers:
Howling Redskins had taken them as targets,
And nailed them naked to painted posts.
I cared nothing for all my crews,
Carrying Flemish wheat or English cotton.
The Rivers let me float down as I wished,
When, with my haulers, those uproars stopped.
In the furious lashing of the waves, last winter,
Deafer than the minds of children,
Ah, How I raced! And the drifting Peninsulas
Have never known so triumphant delight.
The tempest blessed my sea awakening.
Lighter than a cork, I danced on the waves,
Rolling the dead forever in the deep,
For ten nights, beyond the blinking eyes of land!
Me lava, dispersant gouvernail et grappin.
Sweeter than the flesh of sour apples to children,
The green water penetrated my pinewood hull
And washed me of vomit and the stained with blue wine,
Anchor and rudder went drifting away.
Et ravie, un noyé pensif parfois descend;
Since then, I bathed in the Poem of the Sea,
Star-infused and churned into milk,
Devouring green azures; where, ecstatic flotsam,
A dreaming drowned man sometimes drifts by.
Where, suddenly staining the blues, sudden deliriums
And slow rhythms beneath the gleams of the daylight
Stronger than alcohol, vaster than our lyrics,
Ferment the bitter reds of our desire!
I have come to know the skies split apart by lightning,
The waterspouts and breakers and tides: I know the night,
Dawn rising up like a flock of doves,
And I saw, sometimes, what men believed they saw!
I saw the low sun, mystic horrors,
Lighting up with far-reaching violet coagulations,
Like actors in ancient, forgotten plays!
With a shiver of blinds the waves fell
I’ve dreamed of the green nights of the dazzled snows,
Slow-rising kiss rising to the eyelids of the sea,
The circulation of unheard-of saps,
And the blue and yellow, stirring of phosphorescent melody!
For months on end, I’ve followed the swells
Assaulting the reefs like hysterical heads of cows,
Never dreaming that the luminous feet of the Marys
Could muzzle up the heavy-breathing waves!
I have struck, as you know, unbelievable Floridas,
Where the wild eyes of panthers in human skins,
Mingle with the flowers! Rainbow stretched like bridles,
Beneath the seas’horizon, to shadowy fins!
I have seen the enormous swamps, nets
Where a whole Leviathan rots in the rushes!
Downfalls of waters in the midst of the calm,
Downfalls showering into the abysses!
Glaciers, suns of silver, pearling waves, ember skies!
Hideous wrecks at the floor of brown gulfs,
Where the giant snakes, devoured by lice,
Fall from twisted trees, with dark perfumes!
I wanted to show children these sea-bream
Of the blue wave, the golden fish that sing.
A froth of flowers has cradled my drifting,
And delicate breezes tossed me on their wings.
A martyr, sometimes, wearied of poles and zones,
The sea rocked me softly in sighing air
And brought me the yellow cups of shadow flowers,
And I remained there, like a woman on her knees.
Almost an isle, tossing on my boat’s sides
And droppings of pale-eyed clamouring birds
I sailed on, over my frail lines
Drowned men sank backwards into sleep!
N'auraient pas repêché la carcasse ivre d'eau;
Now I, a boat lost under the hair of coves
Tossed by the hurricane through birdless air,
Me, whom all the Monitors and Hansa, sailing ships
Couldn’t salvage, A sarcass, drunk on water.
Des lichens de soleil et des morves d'azur;
Free, smoking, risen from the violet mist,
I, who pierced the skies turning red like a wall,
Hung with the exquisite jam of poets,
Lichens of sunlight, and snots of azure.
Les cieux ultramarins aux ardents entonnoirs;
Who ran, stained with the lunar eletric,
A crazy plank, companied by black sea-horses
When Julys brought down with cudgel blows
Skies of ultramarine into fiery funnels;
불타는 깔때기 속으로 넣어버린 군청색 하늘이여;
I who trembled, feeling at fifty leagues’ distance
The groans of the Behemoth rutting and the dense Maelstroms
Eternal weaver of blue immobilities
I long for Europe its ancient parapets!
Million d'oiseaux d'or, ô future Vigueur?
I have seen archipelagos of stars! And islands
That open feverish skies for wanderers:
Are these bottomless nights your exiled nests,
Oh, millions of golden birds, O Strength of the future?
But, truly, I’ve wept too much! The Dawns
Are heartbreaking, every moon cruel, each sun bitter:
Fierce love puffs me up with drunken slowness
O let my keel burst! O let me sink in the sea!
If I desire any of the waters in Europe I want,
It’s a small pond, black, cold, remote,
A child squatting filled with sadness
Launches a boat as frail as a May butterfly.
O waves, bathed in your languors, I can no more
Sail in the wake of the ships bearing cottons,
Nor assault the pride of pennants and flags,
Nor swim past the dreadful gaze of prison-ships.
